One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: older BFT Deimos BT units installed before 2015 often shipped with a thinner mounting plate than current models. If you buy a replacement plate from a catalog and weld it to an original hinge, you can end up with a stiff joint that fights the operator. We fabricate our plates to the gate’s actual hinge geometry, not a catalog photo.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question for BFT specifically, our position is simple: for electronics and motor internals, we recommend BFT OEM parts. For metal, the conversation changes. BFT does not manufacture its own steel. The hinge plates, brackets, and leaf frames were always fabricated by a local shop or the original installer. So when we weld in a new plate or a gusset, we use domestic steel cut to BFT’s bolt dimensions, not an imported stamped plate of questionable alloy. The metal is as good or better, and it costs less than waiting on an overseas shipment that may not match anyway.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate leaf sags and drags at the far end. A weld at the top hinge has stretched, meaning the leaf now hangs slightly lower than when it was hung. The BFT operator compensates by working harder on the open stroke, which shortens its life.
• The gate jerks or pulses when it moves. A weld inside the leaf frame has cracked, and the frame is flexing under load. The operator’s RPM sensor detects the variability and hunts for a steady speed, causing that stutter you see.
• The hinge post moves or flexes when the gate opens. The weld holding the hinge plate to the post has fractured under repeated torque, and now the post moves with the gate. Left alone, the plate will tear completely away within a few hundred more cycles.
• You see rust trails running down from a hinge or bracket. Water is getting inside a cracked weld, corroding the joint from the inside. In Santa Clarita’s heat, the expansion and contraction cycle makes this worse faster than coastal owners would ever see.
