• The gate sags toward the latch side. This is the hinge barrel wearing internally and the pin taking up slack at a slight angle. You can sometimes measure it: gap the top hinge pin to frame distance with a tape measure, and watch it change by a quarter inch or more as the gate opens.
• A curved scrape mark appears under the swing path. The roller isn’t carrying the leaf anymore, and the gate bottom is doing the work. That wear pattern is the gate telling you the roller’s outer wheel is flat-spotted.
• The gate squeals or groans during each cycle. One squeak usually means a dry hinge; a metallic groan that changes pitch means the roller bearing has flat-spotted and is grinding against the track.
• The latch no longer lines up with the receiver. Hinge wear changes the leaf’s tilt by a degree or two, which throws the latch alignment off. You might find yourself shouldering the gate into lock position, and that’s the clearest sign the hinge set is done.
